An arrest record in Etowah County is not one single file. It starts when law enforcement brings a person to the Etowah County Detention Center for intake. Booking staff search the person, inventory property, collect personal and emergency contact details, take photographs, run identification checks, complete fingerprinting, and check for warrants or holds from other agencies. That jail-side record can show a booking number, arresting agency, booking date, charge labels, bond, and a custody status.
The court side comes next. The Etowah County District Attorney's Office prosecutes criminal cases in the 16th Judicial Circuit, and the Circuit Clerk keeps the circuit and district court records once a case exists. The jail roster may be the first public sign of a same-day arrest, but it is still a custody record. Filed court charges, case events, orders, dispositions, and certified copies come through the clerk or the state court portal. Etowah Court Records Search
The local court-record channel is the Etowah County Circuit Clerk records page. The clerk's office states that a public access computer terminal is inside the Circuit Clerk's Office for public record name searches during the regular business hours of the Etowah County Judicial Building. That office is separate from the jail. The sheriff and detention center handle current custody; the Circuit Clerk handles filed court records and copies.
The clerk's page also says most court records are public and open for inspection. Once the needed case or document is found, copies are requested at the counter or through a written request. That matters for Etowah County arrest records because a booking charge can appear before the court file is ready. For a same-day arrest, the public terminal or clerk staff may not yet have a case number, even when the jail roster already shows a booking.

Requests by mail must include a money order because the clerk page says personal checks are not accepted. The same page warns that requests may take up to 30 days to process due to minimal staffing. That delay is a copy-processing point, not a statement that a case will take 30 days to exist. Use the clerk or Alacourt to learn whether a case has been filed, then use the written process when a document copy or certified record is needed.

Mail written court-record requests to Etowah County Circuit Clerk, 801 Forrest Ave., Suite 202, Gadsden, AL 35901. That is the Judicial Building address used for court records, not the jail address at 827 Forrest Avenue.
Alacourt ACCESS Charges
Alacourt ACCESS is Alabama's paid online court-record portal. It is separate from the free Etowah sheriff roster. The research inspection found a name-search service, a case-detail service, and login or payment gating for full online use. The observed search page advertised a name search with one case detail included. People who need formal court records after an Etowah County arrest should treat Alacourt as a court case tool, not as a jail booking database.
Alacourt can help when travel to the public terminal is not practical, but it does not replace the clerk for all copy needs. A certified copy, an older archived file, or a record that needs local clarification may still require the Etowah Circuit Clerk's request process. If an arrest happened under a municipal ordinance, also check the municipal court path listed by the Etowah court site, including Attalla, Gadsden, and Rainbow City municipal court channels.

This portal is most relevant after the court case exists. It will not prove that a person is still in the Etowah County Detention Center.
Etowah Prosecutor Charge Review
The Etowah County District Attorney's Office is the prosecutor for the 16th Judicial Circuit. The office names Jody Willoughby as District Attorney and lists its location on the ground floor of the Etowah County Judicial Building at 801 Forrest Avenue in Gadsden. The DA website organizes resources around criminal felony procedure, grand jury, district court, circuit court, traffic court, deferred prosecution, and victim assistance.
That prosecutor role explains why Etowah County arrest records and court charges may not match word for word. Jail staff record the custody charge used at booking. Prosecutors may later file a complaint, proceed by information where allowed, present a felony matter to a grand jury, amend a charge, dismiss a count, or route a qualifying matter toward a diversion program. The DA is not the keeper of the jail roster, but the office is central to the charging decisions that appear in the court case.

Bond information appears on the Etowah County jail roster, but it is not the last word. Sample entries in the research showed dollar amounts, $0.00, and No Bond. Booking staff consider charges, bond conditions, probation or parole issues, warrants, and holds from other agencies when reviewing release eligibility. A court appearance can then change both the charge list and the bail amount.
Before anyone posts money, hires a bonding company, or relies on a roster amount, call detention staff at 256-546-2825 for the correct current bail amount, charges, and case numbers. Etowah Charges vs Convictions
An arrest or charge is an accusation. A conviction is a court outcome after a guilty plea, guilty verdict, or other final adjudication that counts as guilt. Etowah Arrest Records Limits
Alabama's public-records law, Code of Alabama Section 36-12-40, supports inspection and copying of public writings unless a law provides an exception. The sheriff prisoner-record statute, Section 36-22-8, requires a public prisoner record. Those laws do not mean every record is online, free, instant, or permanent. Juvenile, youthful-offender, sealed, expunged, investigative, and restricted criminal-history material can be limited.
Alabama expungement is handled through the courts. ALEA says an Alabama court grants expungements, and Alabama Code Chapter 15-27 controls eligibility. Section 15-27-1 addresses certain misdemeanor, violation, traffic, and municipal ordinance records. Section 15-27-2 addresses certain felony charge records. Note: A dismissed charge may still need an expungement order before public access changes in every system.
State and Federal Custody
Etowah County court records are local court records. They do not replace state prison, federal prison, or immigration custody locators. If a person is sentenced to the Alabama Department of Corrections and leaves the Etowah County Detention Center, use the ADOC inmate search by AIS number, first name, or last name. ADOC says its public search contains currently incarcerated ADOC inmates, not historical data, and it excludes Youthful Offender Act inmates from search and population totals.
Federal and immigration custody use separate systems. A federal defendant may be under U.S. Marshals authority before any Bureau of Prisons record appears.
